What are the Common Causes?
INFECTIOUS COLITISFood or water –borne viruses and bacteria can cause colon infections. These infections may cause bloody diarrhea and can result in significant dehydration.
PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS COLITISThis can be caused by antibiotics being taken for an infection. The antibiotic alters the normal bacteria present in the colon allowing growth of the Clostridium bacteria which produce a toxin that causes diarrhea. The diarrhea is usually not bloody but may be accompanied by fever.
Ischemic ColitisThe arteries that supply blood to the colon may become narrow and the colon may loose its blood supply causing inflammation. Lack of blood supply results in pain, fever and blood in stools.
INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASEInflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is actually two chronic diseases, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
- Ulcerative colitiscolitisUlcerative colitis begins in the rectum and may gradually spread throughout the colon. The signs and symptoms include abdominal pain and bloody bowel movements.
- Crohn's disease may involve any part of the digestive tract with diseased areas interspersed with healthy areas of tissue.
Collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis are also part of the inflammatory bowel diseases that affect the colon. Together the two are also known as microscopic colitis. They can co-exist with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
